PRP therapy – the fountain of youth?
Famously known as the vampire facelift, this technique is called Platelet Rich Plasma therapy or PRP because it uses the patients own blood. This procedure is unique because your own natural tissue is used to rejuvenate your appearance without foreign substances or surgical intervention. After Dr. Pavlou takes a sample of your blood, it is spun in a centrifuge. This separates the highly concentrated platelet-rich plasma from the other components of the sample.
Why are we after those platelets?
Platelets are a vital component of our blood. Not only do they promote clotting and wound healing but they also contain a number of growth factors. When injected in the skin or applied by micro needling, our own platelets can be used to treat lines and wrinkles, soften scars, help replace volume, minimize dark circles and under eye bags, and aid with hair restoration. PRP also enhances skin tone, texture and luminosity.
Typically one to three treatment sessions are required, usually spaced 4-6 weeks apart. Most patients enjoy the effect for about a year and a half and can extend the benefits with occasional touch up sessions. I particularly like the science behind this procedure. The autologous nature (using your own blood) of PRP eliminates the risk of immune rejection or complications. To be able to harvest the most potent nutrients from your own blood and apply them to the face and neck is a beautiful thing. There is exciting potential for the use of PRP in regenerative, anti-aging and cosmetic medicine. It is a safe, effective and natural way of harnessing the healing power of your own blood to reverse the signs of aging – your own natural fountain of youth.
PRP therapy is a great addition to your existing aesthetic regimen and works synergistically with botox, fillers, lasers and peels. It is also an effective stand alone treatment for patients who would like to use as natural ingredients as possible – it doesn’t get any more natural than this.
