What Causes Unwanted Veins?

Unwanted veins, which become dilated and noticeable beneath the skin, can appear anywhere on the body but are most frequently found on the face, legs, and feet. Fortunately, with appropriate treatment, the visibility of these veins can often be significantly reduced. The development of unwanted veins is influenced by various factors such as aging, pregnancy, sun exposure, and obesity. Sometimes, they may also indicate an underlying health issue. Managing unwanted veins usually includes a combination of lifestyle modifications and medical interventions.

Spider Veins

Spider veins appear as small, thin lines, often red, purple, or blue, that may look like a web or tree branch. These are close to the skin’s surface and can occur on various body parts, including the legs and face. Key factors contributing to spider veins include:

Genetics: If family members have spider veins, you’re more likely to develop them too.

Hormones: Hormonal changes during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause, or from birth control pills, can increase the risk.

Lifestyle: Prolonged periods of standing or sitting, lack of exercise, and excessive weight can contribute to their formation.

Age: As you age, the valves in your veins may weaken, increasing the likelihood of vein visibility.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are larger, often bulging veins that can be bluish or purplish and twisted in appearance, usually found on the legs. Unlike spider veins, they can cause discomfort and indicate more significant circulatory problems. Their development is often attributed to:

Valve Malfunction: When valves in the veins that help regulate blood flow become weak or damaged, blood can pool in the veins, causing them to enlarge.

Pregnancy: Increased blood volume during pregnancy can strain the veins, coupled with hormonal changes leading to varicose veins.

Occupational Risks: Jobs that require long hours of standing can predispose individuals to varicose veins due to increased pressure in the veins of the lower body.

Physical Inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle can weaken vein walls and affect blood circulation, leading to varicose veins.

ClearV™

ClearV™ is a medical laser device that effectively and safely treats veins such as visible vessels, broken capillaries, spider veins, and vascular lesions. The laser energy gently heats the unwanted veins, vessels and visible vascular structures so they become less noticeable and, in some cases, eliminate them entirely.

Unwanted Vein FAQ

How can unwanted veins be removed permanently?

Yes, certain treatments can permanently remove or significantly reduce the appearance of unwanted veins. Laser therapy, sclerotherapy, and surgical options offer long-lasting results. However, it’s important to note that while these treatments can effectively address existing veins, they do not prevent the formation of new veins, which may require follow-up treatments.

Does BC insurance cover vein treatment?

The Medical Services Plan (MSP) in British Columbia covers treating severe varicose veins under specific conditions. If the varicose veins result in pain that interferes with walking or leads to venous complications such as bleeding, blood clots, skin eczema, or ulceration, MSP may cover the treatment. However, treatments aimed solely at addressing cosmetic concerns, such as the appearance of spider veins or minor varicose veins without associated symptoms or complications, are not covered by MSP. This means that the vein treatment provided by the team at Skin Technique is not covered by your insurance.

What is the average cost of a vein treatment?

The cost of vein treatment can vary widely based on the type of treatment, the severity of the veins being treated, and the number of sessions required. Laser treatments are less invasive and, therefore, less costly than surgical options. For accurate pricing, a consultation with one of our specialists is required.

How long does it take for veins to disappear after laser treatment?

The duration for veins to fade post-ClearV™ laser treatment can differ from person to person. Most individuals may observe visible improvements within four to six weeks. The outcomes and recovery period are influenced by factors such as the dimensions and quantity of veins addressed and the individual’s unique healing process. After completing the advised series of ClearV™ treatments, the results are intended to be enduring, offering a lasting solution to unwanted veins.
